BIOGRAPHY

Ayana Oskenbaeva in rehearsal

Bridging classical heritage with contemporary choreographic vision.

Ayana Oskenbaeva is a choreographer representing a new generation of artists working in academic and dramatic ballet. Born in Kazakhstan, she received her professional training at the Almaty Choreographic School named after A. Seleznyov, graduating with honors. She later continued her education at the Ballet Master’s Faculty of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), studying under People’s Artist of the RSFSR Vladimir Kirillov, where she developed her distinctive choreographic approach rooted in the synthesis of classical ballet tradition and contemporary physical theatre.

She began her professional career while still a student, collaborating with theatre companies and creative teams on a variety of stage productions. From the outset of her artistic journey, she demonstrated a particular interest in large-scale dramatic forms, historical subjects, and psychologically driven storytelling through movement.

She has participated in international ballet and choreography competitions, gaining recognition for both her artistic achievements and her creative work as a young choreographer. These experiences contributed significantly to the development of her artistic vision and professional practice.

As part of her professional development, she was awarded a traineeship at Astana Opera, where she gained valuable experience working within one of Central Asia’s leading opera and ballet institutions.

Her creative portfolio includes ballet productions, musical theatre projects, and original choreographic works created for students of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography. She has also staged concert and gala repertoire, working across a broad spectrum of classical and contemporary dance forms.

Currently, Ayana Oskenbaeva serves as a choreographer at the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after S. Aini in Dushanbe, where she has played an important role in the development of the theatre’s contemporary repertoire.

Her choreographic language combines the precision of classical ballet technique with the expressive possibilities of contemporary movement. Particular attention is given to dramaturgy, character development, and the emotional architecture of performance. Her productions are distinguished by their visual richness, dynamic stage composition, and psychological depth.
